We could have done this Tulum cenote trip on our own and it would have been a disaster. Summer knew every one of the three and made the difference between swimming in water and understanding what we were swimming in.

Sargassum was an issue when we headed out to snorkel, and the van broke down. Our guide handled both with calm and humour, we still saw several large turtles swim right past us, and the Tulum cenote afterwards was the refreshing part.

The best way to do a Tulum cenote morning is early, with a private guide, before the group tours arrive. Ulises was friendly and funny and his English was excellent, and we had the water largely to ourselves.

Advertised as a half day and it is almost a full one. Pickup at 7:45 and back at 3:15. Not a problem for us at all, but be aware of it when you plan the rest of your afternoon around it.

Leo took us through a pitch-black cenote cave with torches and bats overhead while we swam. I have never done anything remotely like it. He also drove and guided the whole day and made all of it easy.

The ruins first, then two cenotes, one underground and one above ground, which is exactly the Tulum cenote contrast you want in a day. Air-conditioned minivan, a guide who made everything simple, no waiting on anybody else.

Visiting Tulum early in the morning is an excellent idea: fewer people and none of the heat. It is a long day for the money and the cenote at the end of it is where you get the heat back out of yourself.

What keeps coming up
The guide is the variable, not the cenote. Reviewers name their guide far more often than they name the water — Summer, Juan, Alejandro Herrera, Paula, Tania, Ulises, Mauricio, Daniel. On a day where three operators visit the same three places, that is the whole difference, and it is the reason a five-person departure and a hundred-person one are not the same product at all.
Early is not a preference, it is the product. Every review describing an empty cenote also describes an early start. One traveller who was the only booking on a cancelled departure got a private morning by accident and wrote about it for that reason.
Length is where expectations break. Two of the honest complaints here are about duration rather than quality: a half day that runs to seven and a half hours, and an eight-hour day that ran to twelve with a stop nobody had been told about. Read the duration column before the price column.
Enclosed water divides people. One reviewer says plainly that the underground cenote is not a good idea for anybody claustrophobic, which is more useful than the run of five-star reviews above it calling the same swim magical. The safety page takes that seriously.
